Marketing Manager (FTC)
This role is to be filled by an employee working from a remote location within the UK. It is a fixed term contract expected to run 14 months.

Role Summary
PLOS is a nonprofit, Open Access publisher empowering researchers to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication.
As a member of our strategic marketing team, you will be responsible for managing and executing marketing campaigns to our valued audience segments that include researchers, readers and authors, ensuring alignment with PLOS strategic priorities and across key internal stakeholder groups.
The successful candidate will have product marketing expertise ideally within the scholarly publishing environment. Closely aligned with Editorial and Publishing departments, the Marketing Manager uses data, customer insight and pre-developed marketing strategy to deliver a highly effective marketing program based on clearly defined objectives that:
- Updates the researcher community on key organizational developments and offerings
- Incorporates influencer and content marketing approaches
- Uses defined market segmentation to define campaign audiences
- Leverages multi-channel marketing
- Integrates core messaging and brand components
- Communicate developments linked to the PLOS mission in Open Science
The successful candidate will have an interest in scientific publishing and Open Science practices; a passion for customer- and community-centric outreach; demonstrated planning and implementation experience; and strong analytical, writing skills and organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities
Planning & Delivery:
- Under the direction of the Head of Strategic Marketing, create a tactical plan and campaign schedule. Leveraging existing systems, processes, and tools, write campaign content and execute, finding effective ways to mechanize and automate communications where relevant.
- Build multi-channel approaches for marketing programs, with a focus on collaborating with internal specialist roles to leverage online, email and influencer approaches, content strategy, organic & campaign-based social media.
- Evaluate customer and competitive research, market conditions, sales performance and results; and effect plan changes as needed.
- Deliver campaigns, working to established targets, including the oversight of automated messaging.
Positioning & Communication:
- Develop and evolve effective, targeted, value-based messaging into campaign copy within defined brand narrative frameworks.
- Cultivate a data-driven understanding & assessment of audience needs, making adjustments as necessary based on region.
- Build marketing campaigns aligned with the overall PLOS brand guidelines that are specific and resonant to researchers in different regions and subject areas.
Research & Evaluation:
- Measure results through use of established reporting tools and metrics; recommend iterative improvements to marketing and communications efforts based on findings.
- Evaluate campaign and scholarly publishing marketing trends to develop strategies for new approaches and methods of promoting content to relevant audiences.
- Utilise frameworks for measuring the impact of communications, programs, and products; use lessons learned to inform business decisions and future development.
Collaboration & Management:
- Work collaboratively with stakeholders across the organization to develop and implement marketing strategy, plans and deliverables
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience in product marketing including experience of marketing directly to researchers, ideally in the publishing industry.
- Highly self-directed, with ability to execute marketing strategies and integrated, cross-channel content and deliverables efficiently and with particular attention on scalability and ROI.
- Experience working with remote, temporary, or contractor colleagues.
Skills & Abilities
- Superior project management skills and attention to detail with a proven ability to manage complex, high impact projects.
- Advanced copywriting skills with proven ability to deliver effective marketing campaigns.
- Strong collaboration skills. Maturity and tact.
- Excellent communication skills under time pressure; ability to partner, influence and collaborate to create strong relationships, gain commitment and accomplish shared goals.
- Fluent written and spoken English is essential.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Prolonged periods stationary at a desk and working on a computer
- Some national and international travel may/will be required
- Some flexibility to work across time zones
The base salary range we’ve established for this position is (UK) £42,000 - £57,000. PLOS also offers a comprehensive benefits package that will be shared with candidates in the interview process.
