Canadian French Copywriter | E-Commerce Company

Remote

For our prestigious client in the e-commerce industry, we are seeking a talented Canadian French Copywriter to join our freelance team at OLIVER Agency. As a Copywriter, you will be embedded in the client's marketing cycle, transcreating and adapting copy from English into Canadian French across a range of marketing channels, while helping ensure content is accurate, engaging, locally relevant, and consistent with the brand's tone of voice and standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transcreate marketing copy so the intended message, tone, and brand personality are preserved in Canadian French.
  • Deliver high-quality copy for product launches and descriptions, and maintain consistency across customer-facing marketing materials spanning web, in-store, direct mail, print, social, digital, and other channels.
  • Post-edit and adapt machine-translated copy to ensure accuracy, fluency, and quality.
  • Localise copy for the target market while staying true to brand’s tone of voice, messaging, and inclusive writing standards.
  • Proofread and edit copy during final in-situ validation to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency.
  • Write creative copy and headlines for selected deliverables, including English back-translations of localised headlines.
  • Research product and technical details and work with cross-functional teams, project managers, and editors to ensure accuracy.
  • Stay informed about market trends, cultural changes, and socio-political developments in the Canadian French market that may affect copy and localisation decisions.
  • Give brief feedback on AI/machine-translated output as part of the quality review process.

Role Expectations

  • Able to work independently from English-language briefs with minimal briefing.
  • Be comfortable using new systems and tools, such as CAT tools, document/spreadsheet software, and annotating PDFs.
  • Communicate clearly, professionally, and proactively.
  • Strong English proficiency, with the ability to discuss creative and linguistic choices clearly and confidently.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with editors, Language Leads, and project teams to maintain quality, flag any issues and provide constructive feedback.
  • Stay flexible and adaptable when briefs, processes, or deadlines change.

Core competencies:

  • Experience & Skills:

    • Minimum 5+ years copywriting or localisation writing experience.
    • Proven transcreation expertise – working creatively from English into Canadian French, not just translating.
    • Excellent time management and prioritisation skills, especially under tight deadlines.
    • Experience with premium or tech brands.
    • Strong body copy adaptation skills, including machine translation post-editing and adaptation.

    Non-negotiable for all candidates:

    • Native-level fluency in Canadian French.
    • Proven understanding of inclusive language guidelines.
    • Active experience working directly from English source copy.
    • Proofing discipline – typos and grammar errors in final submissions are unacceptable.
    • Portfolio showing delivered projects for international brands.

On diversity:

We are actively looking for a diverse pool across gender, background and experience – from agency, in-house, and freelance backgrounds, and across brand categories including tech, consumer, and lifestyle. Candidates with a specific transcreation focus or training are preferred
