An opportunity has arisen for a Senior NGS Scientist to join the R&D team which is responsible for all research and development activity within the organisation.

Reporting to our Head of Research, this role plays a crucial role in the research and development of new products and technologies. You will be involved in a wide range of activities, including technical project management, technical support to the commercial team, and support for the day-to-day running of the laboratory and scientific employees.

Your tasks will include:

  • To complete and oversee a variety of molecular biology projects, including:
    • Technical leadership of research, development, and improvement of new and existing assays
    • Technical project management of large projects and associated project planning, milestones, timelines, experimental design and implementation of laboratory work, reporting, project documentation etc
    • Ensuring successful project transition from phase to phase through project life cycle
    • Ensure technical transfers into Development team are successful
    • Presentation of results and project summaries in both written and oral format and delivery of completed report documents
  • Research and development of new products and technologies, including:
    • Researching, developing, and improving new and existing products
    • Devising new products and proposing those internally
    • Providing technical expertise/training to other research staff
    • Monitoring relevant scientific literature
    • Presenting data at national and international scientific meetings
  • Management and coordination of technical aspects of internal research and collaborative projects:
    • Leading internal and external project and scientific meetings
    • Proposing, evaluating, and managing new products and developing molecular biology technologies.
    • Performing technical components of market, competitor, and intellectual property (IP) analyses.
    • Writing and reviewing R&D grant applications
    • Writing and reviewing patent applications
  • Assist customers, FAS, and wider commercial team, including:
    • Liaising with project partners for samples and collaboration support, including attending regular meetings as appropriate
    • Assisting with technical selling, at times including travelling to customer sites, teleconferences, and other communications
  • Health and safety, Information security and quality, including:
    • Complying with and ensuring that all team members comply with all the companies’ health and safety, information security and quality standard policies (ISO13485, ISO27001 and ISO 9001).
    • Ensuring all Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), COSHH and other documents are completed, updated and understood by team members.
    • Where necessary fulfilling safety and quality roles
  • To complete any other tasks as commensurate with the level and nature of the post as delegated by the Head of Research / Development.

What we’re looking for in you:

Essential

  • Qualified to Masters (essential) / PhD level (desirable) in Molecular Biology/ Genetics based subject (or equivalent experience) with significant post qualification experience
  • Considerable experience in molecular biology technologies (NGS or similar complexity)
  • Proven experience in molecular biology assays optimisation and troubleshooting  
  • Proven experience in novel chemistry and technology development (NGS or similar complexity)
  • Experience (>3 years) of managing or supervising technical staff
  • Experience of working in a commercial environment and interacting directly with customers and sales & marketing colleagues.

Desirable

  • Significant post doctorate experience in molecular biology / analysis of complex datasets
  • Experience in hybridisation techniques
  • Experience with: Design of Experiment, guard banding, process improvement, assay Quality Control process development, automation
  • Ability to establish new scientific contacts and networks
  • Experience in an ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 compliant environment and participation in audits
  • Project management experience.

The role has some requirement for limited travel between the Oxford and Cambridge sites and internationally, this is expected to be around 10-15% of total time.
