Lead Data Analyst

The Company

Octopus Legacy is the place to plan for death and find support after loss.

Having been on our own startup journey, Octopus Group recently bought a stake in our company to supercharge our growth, and now we’re one of the fastest growing companies within the UK’s most exciting group (you may have heard of some of our sister companies…)

With our new brand, the Octopus platform at our disposal and a Top Secret plan to achieve radical scale we’re already transforming the way that people experience the process of planning for and dealing with death.

We’ve assembled a crack team to prepare us for that scale, and you could be the missing piece we’re looking for!

The Role

We are looking for a highly curious and proactive Data Analyst to join our growing team at Octopus Legacy. As our first data hire, you will have a unique opportunity to shape the data culture within the company and play a pivotal role in driving data-driven decision-making. Reporting directly to the Head of Technology, you will also have the chance to grow and eventually lead the data team at OL as the company expands.

Curiosity is essential to this role. We need someone who is not only eager to understand our data but also driven to ask the right questions and explore new ways to leverage data for business success. As a self-starter, you will take initiative in identifying opportunities for data to inform strategy and drive business priorities.

Your primary focus will be on data analytics—working with our data, understanding it, analysing it, and extracting actionable business insights. You will collaborate closely with various department heads and stakeholders to inform business priorities and make strategic recommendations.

As we’re still in the early days of building out our data pipeline and improving our stack, you’ll also be supported to capture and ingest more of the data sources we need to inform those insights, and as we take our product(s) to the next level we’ll need your help identifying what we could be missing.

In addition to your analytical responsibilities, you will educate the wider team on the importance of data-driven decision-making. You will also help define and organise our KPIs into a cohesive KPI tree, essential for guiding our company’s strategy. While deep Data Engineering expertise is not required, basic skills in maintaining and evolving our existing data pipeline will be highly beneficial. A passion for data and a willingness to explore Data Science topics will set you apart.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Analytics:
    • Analyse complex datasets to extract meaningful insights that drive business decisions.
    • Develop reports and dashboards to track key metrics and KPIs.
    • Translate business requirements into data queries and analyses.
    • Visualise data effectively and tell compelling stories that communicate the insights behind the numbers.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration:
    • Partner with Heads of Departments to identify key business questions and provide data-driven recommendations.
    • Work with business stakeholders to understand their data needs and deliver actionable insights.
    • Educate stakeholders on how to interpret data and use it effectively in decision-making processes.
    • Present findings clearly, ensuring that complex data is understandable and actionable for non-technical audiences.
  • KPI Management:
    • Assist the leadership team in defining key performance indicators (KPIs) across different departments.
    • Organise KPIs into a structured KPI tree that aligns with our business objectives.
  • Basic Data Engineering:
    • Maintain and evolve our existing data pipeline to ensure data quality and availability.
    • Work with data from various sources, ensuring it is properly integrated and ready for analysis.
    • Lead on adding more sources to our pipeline where necessary.

Skills and Knowledge

Must haves:

  • Strong curiosity and proactive mindset, with the ability to independently explore data, ask the right questions, identify opportunities, and drive projects forward without requiring constant guidance.
  • Experience in data analytics and the ability to extract actionable insights from complex datasets.
  • Proficiency with SQL and other data query languages.
  • Proven ability to work closely with business stakeholders and translate their needs into data-driven solutions.
  • Experience in developing reports and dashboards to monitor key metrics.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to present complex data in a way that is understandable and actionable for non-technical stakeholders across departments.
  • Proficiency with data visualisation tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker, Metabase).
  • Ability to educate and train stakeholders on data literacy.

Nice to haves:

  • Basic skills in maintaining and evolving data pipelines.
  • Basic programming skills in languages such as Python or R for data manipulation.
  • Understanding of statistical methods and their application to business problems.
  • Experience working in a startup or fast-paced environment.
  • Management experience

Bonus if you:

  • You have a basic understanding of Data Science concepts and are interested in learning more.
  • You’ve previously worked on data pipeline projects or have familiarity with data integration and ETL processes.
  • You have experience in training or educating non-technical teams on data literacy.

For reference, we use:

  • MySQL
  • Fivetran
  • BigQuery
  • Dbt

Our Mission

When people think about planning for death they think about wills, life insurance and funerals. We take these cold processes and turn them into something more human. Share more than money: leave voice notes, music, recipes. Shape a legacy that connects you while you're here. And after you're gone.

Founded by Sam after his mum died suddenly, we’re a group of people who work in death because we’ve been affected by it. We know the difference a good plan makes, and what it’s like when there isn’t one.

Death can come between us, leave mess, legal fees, frustration. But it can also make us stronger. We see a world where people talk openly about death, and work out the real meaning of legacy, one that connects to them. We’re here to make that world happen

Benefits:

  • Octopus share incentive scheme.
  • Flexible working: 3 days in the office (Holborn), remote 2 days a week.
  • Flexible holiday + extra day off for your Birthday.
  • Work from anywhere in the world for up to 4 weeks per year.
  • Vitality Health & Life Insurance.
  • Pension scheme.
  • Enhanced parental leave.
  • Free Will & LPAs + discounts on other Octopus services.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme and access to the Electric Vehicle (EV) Salary Sacrifice Scheme.
  • Octopus Giving: we match any charitable fundraising that you do up to £500.
  • Octopus Springboard: where we help our employees become fully-fledged entrepreneurs.
  • Dog friendly office.
  • Breakfast every day, snacks and wellness activities.

We know that to be truly innovative, we need to have a diverse team around us. That is why Octopus Legacy is committed to creating an inclusive environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
