About the role
NScale is seeking a strategic and hands-on Senior Manager, Employment Tax to lead and deliver employment and payroll tax activities across our growing international footprint. Reporting to the Director Indirect Tax, this role plays a key part in supporting our global workforce strategy by ensuring employment tax risks are identified, managed, and embedded into business and People decisions. You will work closely with Payroll, People (HR), Finance, and Legal teams to support international expansion, global mobility, and equity-based compensation, while ensuring compliance across multiple jurisdictions. This role is well suited to an experienced employment tax professional who thrives in fast-paced, high-growth environments, enjoys solving complex cross-border workforce challenges, and can translate technical employment tax requirements into practical, scalable solutions. Beyond managing compliance, you will help strengthen the employment taxframework that supports NScale’s international hiring models, remote working strategy, andemployee incentive programs
What You’ll be Doing (Responsibilities)
- Act as a key subject matter expert on employment tax, providing guidance on cross- border employment, global mobility, remote working, and international hiring models.
- Partner closely with Payroll and People teams to ensure employment tax considerations are embedded into payroll operations, compensation structures, and
workforce planning. - Assess and advise on employment tax implications of global mobility arrangements, including short- and long-term assignments, remote working, business travel, and permanent establishment risk.
- Support the design and ongoing management of employment tax processes and controls to ensure accurate withholding, reporting, and compliance.
- Provide employment tax input on equity and incentive arrangements, includingESOPs, share-based compensation, and other long-term incentive plans, working closely with Legal, Finance, and external advisors.
- Support the Payroll team in delivery of employment and payroll tax compliance across the international markets, in coordination with internal teams and external
advisors. - Maintain global employment tax compliance calendars, workflows, and documentation to improve visibility, consistency, and governance.
- Support employment and payroll tax audits, inquiries, and interactions with tax authorities, ensuring appropriate documentation, risk management, and timely resolution.
- Work closely with People, Payroll, Finance, Legal, and Commercial teams to advise on employment-related tax impacts of organisational changes, new country entry, and evolving operating models.
- Provide practical, business-focused advice on employment tax risks and opportunities, translating complex technical requirements into clear guidance for non- tax stakeholders.
- Support the development of policies and guidance relating to global mobility, remote working, and equity compensation from an employment tax perspective.
- Help establish and maintain effective governance, internal controls, and documentation standards across global employment and payroll tax processes.
- Monitor global employment tax legislation and regulatory developments, proactively identifying risks, impacts, and improvement opportunities for the business.
- Contribute to tax technology initiatives, payroll process improvements, and automation to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
What We’re Looking For
- ACA, CTA, ATID, CPA, or equivalent professional qualification.
- 8+ years of experience in tax, with significant expertise in UK and EU employment
taxes. - Broad knowledge of international tax principles and a working understanding of
employment tax in cross-border contexts. - Comfortable advising on complex cross-border issues and working across jurisdictions.
- Practical mindset with strong attention to detail and ability to adapt to change.
- Proactive, collaborative, and excited to work in a fast-paced, agile environment.
