About the role:

Location: United Kingdom (full-time), working from the office three days a week (Southwark area). 

We are seeking an experienced Chief Compliance Officer (and MLRO) to lead our Risk and Compliance team for our UK entity. The Chief Compliance Officer will assume an extremely important role in building up our compliance and risk function & team in the UK, and you’ll be fully responsible for all compliance and risk activities for our UK entity which will grow into a global business, and for the team and activities in all countries we expand into with this business unit. 

You will provide oversight and management of the company's Compliance and anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorist financing (CTF) framework, and of all operational and  reputational risk, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and industry best practices within the UK. We’re looking for an experienced leader, who has a strong understanding of all relevant regulatory compliance regulations (Consumer Duty, Safeguarding, GDPR etc.), and all financial crime compliance regulations (AML, etc.), and has a track record of and passion for working in fast paced start-up environments.

What you’ll get to do:

  • Play an instrumental role in building the foundation for what will become the largest and most impactful business of its kind, leaving a lasting legacy in the world of finance, and in African fintech.
  • Develop Pioneering Compliance Policies: You'll create and enforce advanced AML, sanctions, and consumer protection compliance policies, specifically tailored to meet the unique and evolving demands of the fintech industry. Your forward-thinking approach will establish new industry benchmarks for the world of UK and African fintech, and ensure strong regulatory adherence across all the markets we enter into. 
  • Leadership & Team Building: Building up and leading our high performing compliance, AML, financial crime and risk department for our UK entity, including the processes, systems, and the team, which will start with the UK and grow across multiple markets (UK, Nigeria, etc.). 
  • Risk Assessment and Mitigation: Identify, evaluate, and address financial, operational and reputational risks. Your strategic insight will protect our business, ensuring we remain resilient and maintain our competitive advantage in an unpredictable landscape.
  • Cross functional collaboration: Work cross functionally and collaboratively with all team members, especially product, to ensure we’re in line with regulatory requirements. 
  • Regulatory filings: Preparing and submitting all relevant regulatory filings, such as FCA returns. As well, maintain meticulous and comprehensive records of AML/CTF-related activities. 
  • Training and Audits: Prepare and deliver compliance training across the organization, assist in audits by regulators and banking partners, and stay ahead of regulatory changes by updating the business and implementing necessary adjustments. 

About you: 

  • UK-Based Leadership: You are based in the UK and have held senior compliance roles (e.g., Chief Compliance Officer, Head of Compliance and Risk) within an EMI-licensed institution, with a strong relationship with the FCA, or you have been a MLRO within a successful fintech.
  • Fintech and Enterprise Risk Expertise: You have extensive experience in enterprise risk management within the fintech industry, including deep technical knowledge of UK financial services regulatory compliance, the FCA Handbook, and anti-financial crime frameworks.
  • Regulatory and Compliance Proficiency: Proven track record in interpreting and implementing UK payments regulations, with expertise in AML, KYC, CTF, Consumer Duty, GDPR, and regulatory reporting.
  • Leadership and Team Building: Demonstrated ability to build, lead, and motivate high-performing teams across multiple locations, especially in early-stage, fast-paced startups.
  • Global Perspective: Experience in a global organization, or a strong willingness to learn about compliance requirements across different cultures and countries.
  • Advanced Qualifications: Possession of advanced qualifications or professional certifications (e.g., CAMS, ICA Diploma in AML) that enhance your expertise in the field.
