Operational Safety Compliance & Assurance Expert (all genders)

Berlin, Germany; Hamburg, Germany; Munich, Germany; Wolfsburg, Germany

Join us as a Safety Compliance & Assurance Expert (all genders) to strengthen our Safety Operations team for autonomous vehicle programs.

In this role, you will work closely with our Safety Officer Operations to update and maintain a complete Safety Management System (SMS) Manual and ensure safe, compliant, and scalable operations across our global AV fleet.

You will play a central part in defining safe operational processes, performing risk assessments, and ensuring that known vehicle and system limitations are correctly reflected in our operational procedures. This role sits at the intersection of Safety, Release Management, Engineering, Operations, and Training — making it critical to our Go-to-Market success.

What you will do

1. Safety Management System (SMS) Development

  • Analyze formal regulatory, industry, and customer requirements relevant to an operational SMS.
  • Develop and maintain the operational components of the SMS, including safety standards, processes, workflows, templates, and documentation.
  • Ensure traceability, auditability, and compliance across all safety-related operations.

2. Operational Safety Risk Assessment

  • Define the operational scope for AV safety considerations.
  • Conduct holistic risk assessments covering vehicles, infrastructure, procedures, personnel, and environment.
  • Identify operational safety gaps, derive corrective and preventive measures, and track their closure.
  • Collaborate closely with Engineering and Operations to ensure risks are mitigated effectively.

3. Interface to Release Management (Go-to-Market Readiness)

  • Act as the primary Safety Ops representative toward Release Management.
  • Understand and define Safety Ops deliverables for program milestones.
  • Identify operational safety risks or documentation gaps affecting Go‑to‑Market readiness and drive closure.
  • Ensure operational safety inputs are consistently integrated into release planning.

4.  System Limitations & Operationalization

  • Understand, document, and challenge known limitations of the AV system and its operational domain.
  • Translate technical limitations into operational restrictions, safety requirements, procedures, and mitigations.
  • Review and update work instructions, procedures, and operational manuals accordingly.

5. Documentation & Training Alignment

  • Create and maintain work instructions, SOPs, procedures, and user manuals related to safe operations of our AVs.
  • Ensure all operational documentation is aligned with system capabilities and SMS requirements.
  • Work closely with the Training Team to ensure training content for safety drivers reflects the most current procedures and known limitations.

What will help you to fulfill your role

  • A degree in Safety Management, Engineering, Automotive, Transportation, Quality Management, or related field.
  • Several years of experience in safety, compliance, quality, or operational risk management — ideally in automotive, mobility, robotics, or similar fields.
  • Strong understanding of safety documentation, processes, risk assessment methodologies, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear operational instructions.
  • Structured, detail-oriented, and highly organized working style.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills across cross-functional teams.
  • Experience working with autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or safety-critical systems is a strong plus.
