Michels Canada is adding a Civil Estimator to join our preconstruction team. In this role, you will support the development of competitive and accurate estimates while collaborating closely with senior estimators, proposal specialists, and subject matter experts on civil infrastructure bids across Canada. The Estimator will contribute to bids involving open-cut water/sewer/storm pipe, TBM tunneling support, micro‑tunneling, piling works, access shaft construction, structural foundations concrete, buried concrete structures, and other utility‑related components. This exciting position can be based out of our offices in Coquitlam, BC; Concord, ON; or Nisku, AB.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and promote a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers. Follow all safety policies, procedures and regulations. Identify and communicate workplace hazards and correct or seek assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Prepare accurate, timely, and well‑organized estimates.
  • Analyze drawings and specifications to support construction and competitive estimating approaches, while engaging subject matter experts for collaboration.
  • Foster and maintain professional relationships with clients, subcontractors, consultants, vendors, end users, and suppliers.
  • Create scopes of work and assist with issuing request‑for‑quote packages.
  • Review bid requirements, participate in site walkthroughs and project meetings, review geotechnical information, assist with risk identification, and complete quantity take‑offs.
  • Assist in developing preliminary budgets for successful tenders and change order pricing.
  • Contribute to competitive bids through strong attention to detail and cost accuracy. 

Requirements:

  • A related post‑secondary degree from an accredited university or technical college is preferred; equivalent trade experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in civil construction, with exposure to cost estimating, construction management, or field operations.
  • Experience working with a general contractor or major subcontractor
  • Proven experience contributing to bids for small through large‑scale civil infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with Alternative Delivery and Fixed Price bid models is an asset.
  • Knowledge of civil self‑perform disciplines and construction productivity fundamentals.
  • Solid grasp of construction methods, planning, scheduling, and sequencing.
  • Working knowledge of bid preparation, quantity take‑off, subcontractor procurement, pricing, and bid close‑out processes.
  • Ability to identify risks and opportunities within contract documents with guidance from senior team members.
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Experience estimating Water/Wastewater/Stormwater, Open Cut, and Tunnel‑related projects is an asset.
  • Experience using HeavyBid or similar estimating software platforms.

Expected Salary Range

$93,000 - $105,000 CAD
