Design Director

Stockholm

Mentimeter is an engagement tool with a clear goal in mind. To turn presentations into conversations. Through real-time interactivity and clear visualizations, we get people to participate, engage and become more productive. Transforming all those passive meetings, airless classrooms and drawn out trainings into valuable and memorable moments.

We truly believe that you achieve the best results by doing things together. And that successful leaders need to adopt a curious and collaborative mindset in order to get there. So with you at Mentimeter, you’ll be a big part of the ambition to help over 1 billion people listen, learn and work better together.

The Role

As Design Director for our Engagement Tools, you will own parts of the core experience that hundreds of millions of people rely on to turn passive audiences into active participants. This is a role for a design leader who sets direction by shaping the work, not only by managing it.

You will join a product company at a pivotal moment. As Mentimeter evolves from a single tool into an integrated Engagement Suite, the hardest and most valuable design problems now live at the seams, where journeys span areas and coherence is a competitive advantage. You will operate in two primary contexts: within your Product Area Leadership, where the work happens alongside the Product Director and Engineering Director, and within the Design Leadership Team, partnering the Chief Design Officer and fellow Design leaders. You will define the experience direction for your areas and make sure design decisions translate into measurable customer and business impact.

You will report to the Chief Design Officer.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a design leader who leads through the work. Someone with the judgment to set a clear experience direction and the hands-on capability to raise the quality bar by shaping, critiquing, and making alongside the team.

You have led designers in fast-moving, product-led environments, and you have earned your credibility through the impact and quality of your work. You are as comfortable owning experience strategy for a product area as you are getting into the detail of a flow that isn't good enough yet. You operate as a true peer to product and engineering leaders, and you believe design is at its best when it drives outcomes, not when it decorates them.

In this role, you will:

  • Set the experience direction: Define a clear experience vision and architecture for your product areas, and hold the quality bar that makes it real.
  • Shape what doesn't exist yet: Lead the design of new AI powered products, navigating the ambiguity and complexity of finding product-market fit where there is no established path to follow.
  • Drive product impact through design: Own the link between design decisions and the metrics that matter, including activation, engagement, retention, and expansion.
  • Lead as a peer in the area: Work alongside the Product Director and Engineering Director to shape area strategy and roadmap, driving user and experience thinking into the decisions that set direction.
  • Own coherence across the Engagement Suite: Take responsibility for experience quality at the boundaries with adjacent areas, so journeys that span the product feel like one product.
  • Develop the craft and the team: Recruit, coach, and grow Product Designers primarily through the work itself, calibrating performance honestly and having the direct conversations that help people grow.
  • Raise the bar with your peers: Work with fellow design leaders to hold shared experience principles and a shared quality standard across the craft, giving and taking critique at leadership level.
  • Evolve practice through AI: Push how design understands, explores, prototypes, and delivers with AI, increasing speed and quality while protecting product thinking and craft.

Requirements

  • 8+ years in design, including mid-to-senior management experience leading designers in fast-moving, product-led organisations.
  • Proven track record of creating impactful product outcomes through design leadership and delivery.
  • High personal design capability, with a portfolio that demonstrates craft judgment and range.
  • A player-coach leadership style: credible with senior designers, and effective at developing them through the work.
  • Track record of setting experience direction and connecting design decisions to measurable product outcomes.
  • Strong business acumen and the ability to hold your own as a peer to product and engineering leadership.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to align teams and stakeholders around a clear direction.
  • Practical experience applying AI to design exploration, prototyping, and delivery.

AI and Hiring at Mentimeter
At Mentimeter, we believe AI helps us work smarter - but it never replaces the human assessment, curiosity, and personal connection that define our culture and our hiring. We use AI as a sparring partner: to bounce ideas, bring new perspectives, support structure, and make our work more efficient. But the meaning, decisions, and interactions always come from people.
  • AI does not screen or decide on candidates.
  •  There is no automated filtering, ranking, or decision-making in our recruitment process. Every application is reviewed by a person.
  • Hiring teams may use AI to support their work - for example, to structure notes, prepare interview questions, or organize their thinking.
AI strengthens our work, but it does not define it. At Mentimeter, we’re not building an AI-driven hiring process - we’re building a people-first culture, where technology helps us listen, learn, and grow together.

Culture at Mentimeter
At Mentimeter we believe in giving everyone a voice - regardless of who you are. So we build a platform that does just that. Our platform is not only our product but also our organization. A platform where people feel safe, where differences are embraced, a place where you can have fun. We strongly encourage applicants who are people of color, LGBTQ+, women, people with disabilities, and/or formerly incarcerated people, and a college degree is not strictly required. In order to give everyone a voice, we need to be as diverse as our users.
