Role 

Kimbal is recruiting a Principal Engineer / Architect to own the electrical architecture of its BESS product offering from battery terminals to grid interconnection. 

As the owner of power conversion, switchgear, and interconnection subsystems, this person will navigate the challenges of optimizing round-trip efficiency, power quality, and cost within the rapidly evolving Indian energy storage market, all while ensuring code compliance, regulatory approvals, and safety. 

This is a founding role within a new division that operates with the autonomy and pace of a startup, backed by the resources of an established company with deep utility relationships across India. Responsibilities 

  • Own the BESS power architecture from battery terminals to grid interconnection, including: 
  • DC system design: string/rack configuration, control, and protection 
  • Power conversion systems (PCS) 
  • MV and LV transformers and switchgear 
  • Grid interconnection 
  • Author detailed technical specifications for each power subsystem. 
  • Lead vendor evaluation, technical due diligence, and selection; and own the technical relationships with key suppliers. 
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable grid codes and electrical standards in target markets, with primary focus on Indian requirements. 
  • Optimize round-trip efficiency (RTE) across the full power conversion chain. 
  • Perform or oversee power quality analyses. 
  • Define requirements for grid support functions. 
  • Coordinate with controls engineering on PCS control interfaces and dispatch requirements. 
  • Develop validation and acceptance test requirements for all power subsystems. 
  • Lead electrical installation and commissioning of pilot BESS deployments at Kimbal facilities. 
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of global energy storage technology and regulatory trends. 

Qualifications 

Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent proficiency. 
  • Meaningful, hands-on experience in large-scale power conversion systems design and grid interconnection for energy storage or renewable energy systems. 
  • Strong understanding of grid-tied PCS/inverter technology and HV/MV/LV electrical system design. 
  • Experience with power systems protection design, including protection coordination and fault analysis. 
  • Familiarity with grid interconnection standards and the compliance process for utility-scale projects. 
  • Experience leading or participating in the commissioning of large-scale power systems. 
  • Strong emotional intelligence that enables tight collaboration within a high-performance team. 
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication. 
  • High standards for quality and attention to detail in work output. 

Preferred 

  • Familiarity with Indian grid codes: CEA technical standards; CEIG approval processes; documentation requirements. 
  • Prior experience evaluating PCS suppliers. 
  • Experience with power systems analysis tools: PSCAD, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or equivalent. 
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC and IS standards: IEC 62477 (power electronic converters), IEC 61000 series (EMC / power quality), transformer and switchgear standards. 
  • Exposure to the Australian energy market grid codes (AEMO, AS/NZS standards). 
  • Experience in an early-stage product environment.
