Senior Defence Intelligence Analyst (China & Taiwan)

Job purpose:
Janes is seeking a highly motivated Military Capability Analyst to support its Military Intelligence team with responsibility for China and Taiwan. The successful candidate will conduct open-source intelligence (OSINT) research, maintain and enhance foundational military datasets, and produce analytical assessments of military capability, force structure, doctrine, readiness, and force development trends.
This role sits at the intersection of data development and intelligence analysis. The analyst will be responsible for developing and maintaining authoritative military data relating to force structures (ORBAT), equipment inventories, and military installations while leveraging that data to produce military capability assessments and analytical products for Janes customers.
How you will contribute at Janes:
- Research, verify and maintain military Order of Battle (ORBAT) data for the armed forces of China and Taiwan.
- Update and enhance military equipment inventory datasets, including identification, classification and attribution of platforms, systems and capabilities.
- Maintain and expand military installation data, including bases, headquarters, training facilities, logistics infrastructure and operational sites.
- Produce military capability assessments covering the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) and Taiwan Armed Forces.
- Assess military capabilities across land, maritime, air, strategic support and joint force domains.
- Contribute to finished intelligence products, customer-facing research, briefings, webinars and analytical reports.
- Exploit a wide range of Chinese, Taiwanese and international open sources, including official government publications, military media, defence industry reporting, academic literature, satellite imagery and social media.
- Translate, interpret and contextualise Mandarin-language reporting and military documentation.
- Corroborate information across multiple sources and assess source reliability.
- Identify intelligence gaps and conduct targeted research to improve Janes' dataset coverage and analytical understanding.
The ideal skills and experience for this role are:
- Experience conducting OSINT research in defence, security, geopolitical or intelligence-related environments.
- Strong understanding of military organisation, force structure, military equipment and defence terminology.
- Demonstrated ability to synthesise large volumes of information into clear, evidence-based analytical assessments.
- Professional proficiency in Mandarin Chinese (reading required; speaking preferred).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Education:
A Master's degree in one of the following disciplines or a closely related field:
- International Relations
- Strategic Studies
- War Studies
- Defence Studies
- Security Studies
- Military History
- Intelligence Studies
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience analysing Chinese or Taiwanese military forces.
- Familiarity with military doctrine, operational concepts and force employment.
- Experience using geospatial, imagery or satellite-based research techniques.
- Prior experience in defence intelligence, military research, think tanks, academia or defence industry environments.
