Terms of Reference - Translation Consultant
The Opportunity
In our commitment to enhancing service delivery and ensuring clear, accessible communication across all user groups, we are seeking a fluent and knowledgeable French and Kinyarwanda-speaking Translation Consultant to join our team. They will play a crucial role in supporting our content development efforts by translating, editing, and proofreading materials primarily between French and Kinyarwanda. Their work will ensure that product-related information, training manuals, knowledge base articles, and user communications are linguistically accurate, culturally appropriate, and easily understood by our audience. They will also support cross-functional initiatives by translating key communications and collaborating with teams across the organization to improve clarity, accessibility, and user understanding, with a focus on the French and Kinyarwanda-speaking communities we serve.
The Responsibilities:
- Translate, edit, proofread, and occasionally interpret our products' content (written, digital, and multimedia) between French and Kinyarwanda.
- Draft knowledge base articles and FAQs in French and Kinyarwanda, helping users access services independently.
- Create user-friendly how-to videos, training manuals, and product guides in French and Kinyarwanda.
- Conduct regular content audits to ensure accuracy, relevance, and cultural appropriateness.
- Build and maintain a term dictionary and support standardisation of language across platforms.
- Propose strategies to improve the usability of localised content and increase engagement across platforms.
- Collect and analyse user feedback related to content and share insights with relevant teams.
- Participate in content-related initiatives to establish a centre of excellence for multilingual communication.
- Contribute creative ideas to improve our products, platforms, and the user experience.
Qualifications:
- Fluency in Kinyarwanda and French (spoken and written) is required; proficiency in English is a plus.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Education, Linguistics, Translation, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience in translation, editing, or content localisation involving French, Kinyarwanda, and English.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension.
- Strong attention to detail, with a high bar for accuracy and quality.
- Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritise tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
- Tech-savvy, with familiarity in using tools like Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Slack, and basic knowledge of Irembo’s platforms.
- A self-starter, proactive and organised, with a commitment to excellence and user-focused service.
- Open to learning, feedback, and working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Key Deliverables:
- Translated and localised knowledge base articles, training manuals, and how-to videos in French and Kinyarwanda to support user self-service.
- Translation and editing support for cross-functional initiatives, including product updates and user communications.
- Regular content audits and improvement reports focused on accuracy, clarity, and cultural relevance.
