Staff R&D Scientist – SNSPD Technologies
ID Quantique (IDQ) as part of IONQ, is a global leader in quantum-safe communications and quantum detection systems. We provide solutions to protect governments, telecommunication infrastructures, and banking & financial institutions from the “harvest-now, decrypt-later” threat, delivering both terrestrial and space-based quantum-safe networks in live operation globally. Our Quantum Detection Systems push the limits of single-photon detection, powering breakthroughs in quantum communication, sensing, computing, and ultra-sensitive imaging in partnership with top researchers and tech innovators worldwide.
What to expect
We are looking for a Staff R&D Scientist to join its SNSPD team in Geneva. The successful candidate will play a key role in driving process improvements, scaling nanofabrication technologies, and leading critical development projects aligned with the long-term technical roadmap. This role requires deep cleanroom expertise, hands-on experience with SNSPDs, and the ability to translate research into short- and mid-term product value.
What you'll be doing
The position combines technical leadership with active experimental work. The candidate is expected to initiate and lead projects that open new technological directions while contributing directly to the delivery of high-performance SNSPDs. Strong collaboration with production, R&D, and systems teams is essential.
You will drive R&D projects aligned with the SNSPD technology roadmap, taking ownership from initial concept through experimental validation and transfer to production. This includes supporting the development, optimisation, and scaling of cleanroom nanofabrication processes with a strong focus on yield, performance, and manufacturability, while contributing to both short-term product features and the advancement of future SNSPD generations. You will also perform and supervise experimental characterisation and testing, including cryogenic measurements, using data-driven insights to guide process and device improvements.
Working closely with production, R&D, and system engineering teams, you will ensure effective technology transfer and alignment across functions. In addition, you will contribute to the evaluation of external large-scale fabrication facilities, assess transfer requirements, and support scientific publications and conference participation in collaboration with the wider R&D team.
- Lead R&D initiatives, experimental validation, and process scaling to support current products and future SNSPD technologies
- Drive cross-functional collaboration, data analysis, and external partnerships to enable technology transfer, innovation, and scientific contribution
What you'll bring
We are seeking a candidate with a PhD or Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering, or a closely related field, and at least five years of hands-on experience in the design and cleanroom nanofabrication of superconducting or nanoscale devices. Experience with SNSPDs and cryogenic systems, including device testing and characterisation, is essential, alongside a strong background in process development and scaling from R&D to production. Familiarity with a range of cleanroom facilities and knowledge of electronics and cryo-electronics will further support success in this role.
You will demonstrate the ability to lead technical projects and drive new development directions, working autonomously with a proactive and delivery-oriented mindset. As a strong team player with excellent communication skills, you will collaborate effectively across disciplines, with fluency in English required and French considered an advantage.
- Extensive experience in nanofabrication, SNSPDs, and cryogenic systems, with strong expertise in process development and scale-up
- Proven technical leadership and collaborative approach, with the ability to work autonomously and communicate effectively across teams
You'll be a great fit with
With over eight years of hands-on experience in cleanroom nanofabrication, you bring strong practical expertise in advanced processing techniques, complemented by a solid understanding of integrated photonics and optics. You also have experience collaborating with external foundries, enabling effective coordination and technology transfer across different fabrication environments.
