Graduate Engineer/Scientist (Maritime and Ships)

As a graduate at HR Wallingford, you will have the opportunity to work in our Maritime and Ships Division. You will work amongst a team of specialist engineers and scientists who are experts in their field, working on major projects worldwide.

The role in the Maritime and Ships group will be based in Wallingford and will involve working in our UK Ship Simulation Centre, our offices, as well as our physical modelling hall. The role will include the following tasks:

  • Operating the UK Ship Simulator as part of the simulation team running studies to assess port design for the safe navigation of vessels.
  • Working on mooring assessments with the use of our dynamic mooring analysis tools to ensure safe mooring of ships at berth
  • Operating scale physical models
  • Data processing, analysing an reporting results to enable them to be presented to clients

About you

You will be a graduate, or due to graduate in summer 2026, with a degree in engineering, ship science, a numerate discipline, or another physical science related to coastal environments (such as Oceanography or Geography). We will also consider applicants with equivalent professional experience relevant to the role. You will have strong numerical and organisational skills, and knowledge of ships, shipping, or boating will be a significant advantage

Many of our physical models are large and the role involves tasks such as carrying, moving, or assembling materials for physical model construction. We will make reasonable adjustments to support applicants in performing these duties. As a team player you will enjoy the challenge of working in a collaborative and rewarding environment.

You are enthusiastic about learning, take responsibility for your actions and are motivated to deliver. You pay attention to detail and are comfortable working to deadlines. Familiarity with the use of handling data (such as spreadsheets) and word processing packages is essential, and knowledge of a computer language would also be useful.

Key qualifications and skills

  • A good engineering degree or scientific degree or PHD in a relevant subject. Other directly relevant naval experience/qualifications will also be considered.
  • Relevant professional experience and/or a higher degree in a relevant subject
  • On route to professional accreditation (ICE, IMAREST, Naval Architecture etc)
  • Basic experience of ship navigation, ship mooring and/or port operations/logistics consultancy project work and delivery to the required quality on time and on budget.
  • A knowledge of relevant standards and international industry guidance, such as those published by British Standards, PIANC, OCIMF and SIGTTO
  • Experience in client liaison
