Staff IoT Architect (all genders)

About the Role 

As a Staff Engineer - IoT Architecture, you will be part of a high-impact team designing and enabling our GROPYUS Smart Living and Smart Building experience through scalable IoT systems. You will play a crucial role in defining the architecture and operational blueprints of our IoT platform — ensuring our digital infrastructure is robust, scalable, and aligned with GROPYUS' broader mission of sustainable and affordable smart buildings. 

Working cross-functionally with Software & Data Engineers, Product Managers and Product Designers within the Building Operating System area, you will drive decisions around architecture, technology selection, and operations at scale. You’ll collaborate closely with other Staff & Senior engineers and stakeholders to evolve our systems, contribute to technical strategy for GROPYUS at large, and lead initiatives that shape the future of smart building technology. 

What you’ll be doing 

As a Staff Engineer (f/m/d) with focus on IoT Architecture, privacy and data protection, you will be responsible for: 

• Designing system and software architecture for scalable, reliable, and secure IoT systems that power smart homes and smart buildings 
• Leading technology strategy and integration for key smart building systems including HVAC, lighting, access control, occupancy sensing, and energy management 
• Driving end-to-end architecture decisions from edge devices and gateways to cloud platforms and data pipelines 
• Operating and maintaining real-world IoT deployments at scale, across both residential and commercial settings 
• Supporting software and firmware lifecycle management across heterogeneous device ecosystems 
• Working closely with other Staff Engineers and Engineering Leads to align infrastructure, development, and product goals 
• Mentoring engineering teams on best practices in scalable IoT solutions and robust & maintainable system operation 

What you bring 

• Proven experience in designing, architecting, deploying, and operating large-scale IoT systems in smart home or smart building contexts, including both hardware and software components 
• Strong understanding of Linux based operating systems and distributed system architecture 
• Hands-on experience with device provisioning, over-the-air (OTA) updates, and lifecycle management 
• Familiarity with connectivity technologies (Wi-Fi, BLE, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, NB-IoT, 5G, etc.) and their trade-offs in real-world deployments. Deep understanding of relevant technologies such as MQTT, CoAP, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, KNX, BACnet, Matter, HTTP/REST/gRPC 
• Experience with cloud-based IoT platforms (e.g., AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, Google Cloud IoT, Eclipse Ditto / Hono), as well as local/edge computing frameworks 
• Experience with data ingestion, processing, and analytics pipelines for IoT data, including time-series databases and event-driven architectures  
• Solid knowledge of security best practices for IoT, including device authentication, secure communication, and data privacy 
• Hands-on experience integrating sensors, controllers, and automation frameworks in a building environment 
• A strong collaborative mindset and excellent communication skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional architectural initiatives 
• Experience in driving and documenting software systems architecture in general and the decisions made in this respect in particular 
• Experience in working in an agile environment, leading cross-functional teams, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with product, security, and operations teams 
• Experience with regulatory and compliance requirements relevant to IoT (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, industry-specific standards) is a plus
