The role
We are looking for a seasoned reporter with a track record of scoops and smart features to join the FT’s San Francisco bureau on one of the newspaper’s most important and dynamic beats.
We want a reporter who can find the key financial powerbrokers in Silicon Valley and global tech to break global exclusives about their dealmaking.
This person will help break news on the hundreds of billions being invested in artificial intelligence start-ups, from those building frontier models to novel AI applications and defence tech.
Another key responsibility will be contributing to in-depth, sophisticated reporting into the vast and often circuitous financing behind the global data centre boom.
Trillions are forecast to be spent on chips, servers and power infrastructure by Big Tech hyperscalers and neocloud providers, which are starting to take on large sums of debt as they plot to bring gigawatts of new capacity online.
Many are questioning whether the sector is already in a bubble that could prove disastrous for the US stock market and economy if it bursts. The FT must continue to lead coverage of the issue.
This person will work closely with our existing tech, finance, deals and venture capital correspondents in San Francisco, New York, London, China, as well as the FT’s wider network of 600 reporters in 40 countries. This will be a team effort where collaboration, sharing tips and bylines is essential.
As with most FT reporting assignments, this job requires occasional travel and participation in a weekend rota.
The demands are high, but so is the opportunity: reporting on the people and companies that will change the world.
Please submit your application by the end of the day, Thursday November 20 2025.
Salary range
A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $100,000 to $150,000. To ensure pay fairness, the successful candidate will be offered a salary within the estimated salary range based on a number of considerations including but not limited to: skill set; experience and training; certifications; and other business and organisational needs. This position is represented by the News Guild.
The use of AI
Original reporting, great writing and intelligent commentary lie at the heart of FT journalism. Our readers trust us to produce quality journalism that is accurate, fair and insightful. This is why FT editorial staff do not by default use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to write articles or create other reader-facing content. For specific and pre-approved cases, AI can be harnessed for certain tasks, such as assisting data research for investigations.
We expect applicants to the FT newsroom to refrain from using AI in their test submissions, and any written materials should be a genuine reflection of their own knowledge, skills and experiences. We encourage candidates only to employ AI as a tool to help with research and interview readiness for a role.
Candidates should be aware that the use of AI throughout the application process is monitored to ensure a fair and transparent hiring process for all.
