The role

The companies desk is looking for an acting assistant companies news editor and writer of the City Bulletin newsletter, to cover a period of parental leave. This is a key position in the team, responsible for putting together the early-morning newsletter for the FT’s core UK business readership as well playing an important role in the commissioning and editing of news. 

This editor should be able to write with personality and confidence on a wide range of business and financial issues, quickly analysing the news released to the stock exchange each morning and assembling a concise but comprehensive view of the day for a City reader. 

After filing the newsletter, this editor will be part of a team handling breaking corporate news each morning, as well as helping plan coverage, commission stories and work with reporters on producing distinctive content across a wide range of sectors. 

The role would suit an experienced corporate reporter with a desire to get editing experience, or an editor who would also like to be able to write regularly too. This person could be called upon to deputise for other sector specialist editors, depending on experience. 

The right candidate would need to be a sharp copy editor, able to handle major breaking stories cleanly and quickly as well as honing longer pieces to ensure they really shine. 

They also need to develop a close working relationship with reporters, both in London and in overseas offices, to manage workflow, chase news hard and produce distinctive, agenda-setting content. 

The news editor may be asked to work Sunday shifts, as part of the desk rota.

 

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Ensuring the text of our stories sings and the non-text elements are compelling

  • Incorporating data and visual elements into corporate stories as standard

  • Conceiving, planning and commissioning special projects, including series, investigations and data or visually-led story-telling

  • Coordinating coverage and commissioning across sectors, including liaising with other London desks and teams overseas

  • Deputising for colleagues on other sectors where required, as well as helping with the smooth running of the companies coverage more generally
