Editor, World News Desk

The Role

This editing role will be one of the most varied and fast-paced jobs on the World News Desk. The successful applicant will be responsible for commissioning and editing critical news stories and features in Europe and across the FT’s international network.

Good judgement, an eye for hidden stories and the assurance to independently handle complex breaking news are crucial. The position is perfect for both accomplished editors with reporting experience, or correspondents looking for a stepping stone into the our international network.

Working closely with Alex Barker, Valentina Pop and regional editors, you will develop and commission stories with a focus on continental Europe, shaping our coverage at a time of conflict, rapid geopolitical change, and economic disruption. You will work closely with Vanessa Brown, and the data and visual team to enrich our journalism and develop distinctive ways to tell core FT stories. Experience reporting in Europe would be an advantage.

You will also often be responsible for managing the World News Desk in the first phase of the London morning, speaking to correspondents from Ukraine to the Middle East to take stock of the latest military and political developments, then seeing through breaking news stories at pace. It is a demanding role that requires energy, calmness under pressure, and assured copy editing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Actively commission stories with the confidence to make big calls and give the FT’s coverage a distinct edge
  • Edit a wide range of stories swiftly and accurately, from short news pieces to in-depth reads
  • Ensure our stories are presented in the most compelling way possible, pulling in readers with sharp headlines and strong leads
  • Spearhead digital story-telling projects and be ready to publish/produce across multiple platforms
  • Present when required the day’s top global stories at newsroom meetings
  • Weekend shifts are required as part of the team rota

What we are looking for

You will show an understanding of Europe and what interests a business reader, bring to life complex political stories and shape a wide breadth of coverage from Russian military tactics to European parliament politics.

The role would suit an experienced foreign correspondent with a desire to move into editing or an editor with regional knowledge and reporting experience.
