What does this role involve?
As a Lead Robotics Software Engineer, you will play a key part in helping the autonomy team deliver technically complex inner-team and cross-team projects by providing the technical support, management, and coordination.
You will have the opportunity to help define the process we use to support a high-performance engineering team, and will work closely with the business, management, and product teams to ensure that we have the resources and strategy in place to turn customer requirements into deliverable features.
This is an engineering leadership role that offers both guidance and management of technical projects as well as direct management responsibility, strategic oversight and coordination between the engineering teams and wider company. You will report to the Head of Autonomy to deliver an ambitious program of the development of our autonomous robots.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading autonomy and cross-team projects and i) defining technical priorities in projects, ii) identifying and communicating technical challenges as part of the planning process and iii) facilitating communication and coordination of (cross-team) projects, ensuring that everyone is working towards the same goals.
- Contribute to the monitoring and planning of software engineering activity, including staffing and technology requirements, budgeting, reporting, and long-term roadmapping.
- Establishing effective, sustainable workflows for feature/project delivery, supporting the delivery of high-quality products at a steady pace.
- Supervising and mentoring engineers during project work to enable them achieving technical excellence
- Acting as the direct line manager for engineers and supporting them in their technical and personal growth
- Coordinating the process of delivery for software projects – including the coordination of project kickoff meetings, Agile ceremonies, and product demos.
You should have:
- Demonstrable experience of engineering leadership and team management
- Deep expertise of software development methodologies for autonomous systems and the ability to drive adoption and improvements across teams
- Deep expertise and an active involvement in developing real-world autonomous, mobile systems such as robots or autonomous vehicles (ROS 2 is a plus)
- Deep expertise of challenges and solutions of deploying autonomous systems in different environments
- A clear understanding of the theory and practice of Agile workflows for software project delivery.
- Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders across the whole company, expressing project requirements and challenges in clear and transparent language.
- Experience of managing multiple concurrent projects to time, budget, and performance specifications, including the scheduling and prioritisation of conflicting requirements.
- Excellent knowledge of the process of building and deploying software in a fast-paced, agile environment.
