About the Role

We’re looking for an experienced PHP Team Lead to take a key leadership role in our Sportsbook engineering division. This team builds and evolves systems that must react to external events in real-time, handle high‑volume transactional flows, and operate under strict performance and reliability constraints.

This role is based in Sofia, Bulgaria and we welcome candidates who are open to relocating (relocation support provided).

What You’ll Do:

• Technical Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of PHP engineers working on high-throughput backend services. Set engineering standards, drive architectural direction, and ensure consistent code quality.
• System Ownership: Design and evolve systems that process large volumes of time-sensitive data with strict latency requirements. Build services that react to external events in real-time and maintain predictable behavior under heavy load.
• Hands-On Engineering: Contribute to core backend components using PHP and frameworks such as Phalcon or Symfony. Develop APIs, microservices, and data-processing pipelines optimized for speed and reliability.
• Mentorship & Growth: Coach and develop team members, conduct code reviews, and foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and accountability.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with product, data, and operational teams to deliver features that depend on accurate, timely, and resilient system behavior.
• Performance & Reliability: Implement caching, queuing, and streaming solutions to ensure system responsiveness during peak activity.Collaborate with DevOps to maintain high availability, observability, and incident-readiness.
• Strategic Contribution: Influence long-term technical roadmaps, scalability strategies, and architectural evolution for mission-critical systems.

Employees may be required to participate in an on-call rotation, ensuring availability outside regular working hours to respond to urgent issues as needed as per the On call policy.

Who You Are:

• Experience: 7+ years of hands-on PHP development experience, including 2+ years in a leadership or senior technical role.
• Technical Expertise:
• Strong PHP & OOP fundamentals, including design patterns and clean code principles.
• Experience with Phalcon and/or Symfony frameworks.
• Background in high-volume, event-driven, or time-sensitive systems.
• Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL databases.
• Experience with RabbitMQ, Kafka, Redis, Memcached, or similar technologies.
• High proficiency with microservices and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Architecture & Design: Ability to design systems for scalability, fault tolerance, and predictable performance under load. Comfortable making decisions in fast-moving, high-impact environments.
• Soft Skills: Strong communicator, fluent in English, able to lead through influence and technical vision.
• Mindset: Analytical, proactive, and motivated by solving complex engineering challenges. Passionate about building systems where performance, correctness, and reliability are non-negotiable.

Nice to Have:

• Experience in iGaming, Sportsbook, or transaction-heavy systems.
• Experience with additional backend and frontend technologies such as Node.js, Python, JavaScript, Vue.js .
