Overview
At Cognite, the Strategic Technical Advisor (Operations) acts as the operational "North Star" for our most complex, large-scale programs. This role is the bridge between global program leadership and the partner-led teams responsible for the long-term maintenance and reliability of the CDF platform.
Your mission is to ensure that the partner transitions from "building" to "operating" with world-class proficiency. You are the guardian of Operational Integrity. You ensure that distributed teams remain aligned with Cognite’s operational standards through influence, expert advisory, and technical vetting. You don't manage the day-to-day tickets; instead, you establish the "Operational Gold Standard"—the patterns for monitoring, performance, and platform health—and advise the partner on how to scale them.
Location & Travel: Based in Bangalore, India with some travel expected
What You’ll Do
1. The "Operational Gold Standard" & Prototyping
- Operational "Spiking": Before the partner implements a new operational workflow (e.g., automated scaling, new monitoring stack, or complex platform upgrade), you perform an "Operational Spike." You prototype the configuration to identify reliability risks and performance bottlenecks early and coordinate approval with the overarching technical governance team.
- Prescribing Runbooks: You act as a consultant to partner teams, advising on the logic and standards required for high-tier monitoring and CI/CD. Your role is to provide the "Gold Standard" methodology, mentoring the enterprise on how to adopt and implement these frameworks at scale.
- Operational Asset Management: Own the technical knowledge repository for platform operations. You ensure that all troubleshooting patterns, root-cause analyses, and optimization blueprints are documented to prevent knowledge silos in the partner team.
2. Operational Advisory & Governance
- Technical Audit of "Run": You develop and lead a technical audit framework for platform operations. You perform periodic "Deep Dives" into the partner’s platform configurations and maintenance scripts to independently assess if they meet Cognite’s standards for security and stability.
- SLO/SLI Stewardship: Audit the partner’s performance against Service Level Objectives (SLOs). You advise them on how to define and track meaningful indicators (SLIs) for data latency, API availability, and system throughput.
- Operations Vetting: Provide high-level technical advisory to ensure the partner implements platform upgrades and patches correctly. You act as the guardian of platform health without owning the daily operational tasks.
3. Scaling, Feedback Loops & Triaging Excellence
- Triaging Strategy & Upskilling: You are responsible for maturing the partner's ability to diagnose complex issues. You create "Triage Playbooks" and logic trees to teach partner resources how to systematically distinguish between source system issues (OT/IT), partner configuration errors, and Cognite product bugs.
- Training & Operational Onboarding: Create training paths focused on Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles within the CDF ecosystem. You support the onboarding of partner resources to ensure they operate the platform at "Cognite-grade" proficiency.
- Internal Product Feedback (Ops Focus): Act as the voice of the program to Cognite’s Product teams. You advocate for "serviceability" features—identifying where the product needs better observability or automated triaging tools to reduce the partner's operational overhead.
Who You Are
- 8–10+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, SRE, or Technical Operations Architecture.
- Technical Depth: Expert-level knowledge of cloud infrastructure (Azure/GCP), Kubernetes, CI/CD automation, and large-scale data platform monitoring.
- The "Advisory" Mindset: You excel at teaching others how to fish. You are comfortable being the "Auditor" who identifies gaps in the partner's operational discipline and provides the roadmap to fix them.
Traits That Make You Thrive
- Operational Rigor: You believe that manual intervention is a bug and that automated, observable systems are the only way to scale.
- Patience & Mentorship: You enjoy seeing a partner team mature from reactive firefighting to proactive platform stewardship.
Predictive Thinking: You have a "sixth sense" for platform instability and intervene through advisory before a crisis occurs.
