The impact you will make

In this role, you will have the chance to deepen your expertise by working at the forefront of high-power lasers. You will be a key person for the control system of a scalable, industrial ultra-high-intensity laser system, and you will own dedicated projects or work packages that take control system design from lab-grade functionality to industrially robust, repeatable operation. Your contributions will significantly impact Caelora's mission to bring prototypes to industrial products, ensuring that the control system that runs the laser today can be reproduced, maintained, and scaled tomorrow. You will bring solid expertise to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including those at Marvel Fusion, as well as with suppliers and partners. 
 
This role is ideal for candidates with hands-on experience in developing control systems for complex projects, a genuine interest in the transition from prototype to industrial product, and a desire to develop further within a multidisciplinary and multinational team.

Your Responsibilities

  • Design and develop the control system of a scalable, industrial diode-pumped ultra-high intensity laser system 
  • Actively advance lab-control functionality into industrially specified, maintainable, and repeatable control architectures — not a one-off lab setup, but a system that can be reproduced across future installations and diagnosed remotely when a fault occurs at a customer site 
  • Define the resource requirements for implementing the control system
  • Lead the implementation and testing of these systems during the assembly and commissioning phase, and own the acceptance tests for the control system, both for what we deliver to a customer and for what a supplier delivers to us
  • Derive specifications and document them in proper form, with an eye toward traceability and reproducibility as the system matures from prototype to series 
  • Be responsible for the integration of the control system into a future facility or customer site, and closely collaborate with the Laser and Engineering departments of Marvel Fusion in the planning, construction, and commissioning phases 
  • Work closely with suppliers and integration partners to align control system specifications with feasibility, capacity, and quality capability already in the design phase, and own the interfaces between supplier-delivered control systems and our own software, so that no part of the chain is left without an owner
  • Contribute your experience with control systems to the overall laser design 
  • Design and implement machine protection and the interfaces to personnel safety: interlocks, shutter and emergency-stop logic, and fault handling fast enough to protect hardware between shots
  • Own the timing of the machine: trigger distribution and delay generation across seed, amplifiers, Pockels cells, pump diodes, cameras and diagnostics, plus synchronization to a customer's external trigger, and the diagnostics that verify it
  • Build the diagnostics and data layer so that performance, drift and faults can be analyzed rather than recalled: cameras, energy meters, spectrometers and photodiodes feeding a shot-indexed record
  • Implement closed-loop control where it earns its place, for example, beam pointing and energy stabilization, and repeatable startup and shutdown sequences
  • Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative team environment in which all team members feel supported, valued, and heard

What you bring

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Electrical, Control, or Software Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Extensive practical experience in designing and implementing complex control systems with significant areas of responsibility 
  • Experience in integrating multiple systems of multiple companies and stakeholder management in general, including specifying and formally accepting control systems delivered by an external supplier 
  • Experience with controls of cameras, motors, power supply (and other subsystems related to laser technology), and with industrial control hardware: PLCs, fieldbus such as EtherCAT or IO-Link, motion control, sensors and actuators
  • Demonstrated experience taking a control system from prototype to series maturity — e.g. robustness, maintainability, and repeatability considerations beyond a single lab instance 
  • Experience with interlocks and machine protection for equipment that can damage itself
  • Experience with timing and trigger distribution in pulsed or synchronized machines
  • Working knowledge of closed-loop control, and of image and signal processing for diagnostics
  • Professional software engineering practice: version control, code review, testing, configuration management and documentation
  • Ability to plan, organize, conduct, and lead technical projects/programs within your field of responsibility
  • Comfortable in the laboratory, debugging real hardware and not only code
  • Fluent in English 
  • A high degree of flexibility, adaptability, and a proactive, can-do attitude 
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills 
  • You are willing to reside in the greater Munich area 
  • Willingness to travel

What sets you apart

  • Experience with industrial control standards or practices relevant to bringing a control system from prototype to series (e.g., structured commissioning processes, industrial fieldbus/communication standards) 
  • Knowledge of quality management standards (e.g. ISO 10007, ISO 9001) and their application in the transition from one-off to series production 
  • High-energy or ultrafast laser systems, or another machine with comparable diagnostics
  • Control frameworks used at large facilities
  • Data-driven or machine-learning approaches to tuning and stabilization
