The impact you will make

In this role, you will have the chance to deepen your expertise by working at the forefront of high-power lasers. You will be a key person in defining, structuring, and integrating the overall system architecture of a scalable, industrial ultra-high-intensity laser system, and you will own dedicated interfaces or work packages that ensure the many mechanical, optical, electrical, and control subsystems come together as one coherent, reliable whole. Your contributions will significantly impact Caelora's mission of bringing prototypes to industrial products, ensuring that what works in the lab can be specified, verified, and scaled with confidence. You will bring solid expertise to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including those at Marvel Fusion, translating requirements between science, engineering, and manufacturing so that nothing gets lost at the handoffs. Furthermore, you will establish connections with external partners worldwide, including suppliers and manufacturing partners.
 
This role is ideal for candidates with hands-on experience in systems engineering for complex, multidisciplinary technical projects, who have a genuine interest in the transition from prototype to industrial product, and who would like to develop further within a multidisciplinary and multinational team. 

Your Responsibilities

  • Define, structure, and maintain the overall system architecture of a scalable, industrial ultra-high-intensity laser system, ensuring coherent integration across mechanical, optical, electrical, and control subsystems 
  • Own requirements management: capture, structure, allocate, and trace technical requirements from top-level system goals down to subsystem and component specifications - in close collaboration with the technical project manager
  • Own the system integration strategy, defining integration sequences, dependencies, acceptance criteria, and technical readiness gates across mechanical, optical, electrical, controls, vacuum, and safety systems.
  • Define and manage interfaces between subsystems and disciplines, proactively identifying and resolving conflicts before they become costly late-stage issues
  • Contribute to system-level trade studies and design reviews, weighing performance, manufacturability, cost, and schedule against each other 
  • Develop and oversee verification and validation plans, ensuring that subsystem and system-level testing confirms both scientific performance and industrial reproducibility 
  • Support the translation of lab-proven concepts into industrially specified, traceable, and repeatable system designs (e.g., through structured requirements, interface control documents, and configuration management) 
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to align system specifications with feasibility, capacity, and quality capability already in the design phase 
  • Contribute to risk management at the system level, tracking technical risks and their mitigation across the project lifecycle 
  • Interact with external partners, suppliers, and internal teams (Laser, Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Supply Chain/Procurement) throughout development and industrialization 
  • Maintain system-level technical documentation and change tracking across the product's various maturity stages, from prototype to pre-series to series 
  • Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative team environment in which all team members feel supported, valued, and heard

What you bring

  • Bachelor's with relevant experience, Master's or Ph.D. in Systems Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related field 
  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering on complex, multidisciplinary technical projects (requirements management, interface definition, verification & validation)
  • Familiarity with systems engineering tools and methods (e.g., requirements management software, model-based systems engineering, V-model or similar development frameworks) 
  • Ability to plan, organize, conduct, and lead technical projects/programs
  • Strong ability to communicate across disciplines and translate between scientific, engineering, and manufacturing perspectives 
  • Fluent in English 
  • A high degree of flexibility, adaptability, and a proactive, can-do attitude 
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills 
  • You are willing to reside in the greater Munich area 
  • Willingness to travel 

What sets you apart

  • Experience in a scale-up or production ramp-up of a physical high-tech product — ideally from photonics, semiconductors, aerospace, or automotive 
  • Experience taking complex hardware through design maturity gates such as PDR, CDR, integration readiness, commissioning, and acceptance testing.
  • Hands-on experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and system architecture tools, including the development of system architectures, requirements, interfaces, and traceability models.
  • Experience with system safety, risk, or reliability engineering (e.g., FMEA, hazard analysis) 
  • Knowledge of quality management standards (e.g. ISO 10007, ISO 9001) and their application in the transition from one-off to series production 
  • Background in optomechanical or laser system design, giving added credibility when defining interfaces with those subsystems
