About this role in the team:

The Digital Assets domain owns the end-to-end infrastructure that connects BVNK to digital asset networks and manages custody of those assets. Layer1 is BVNK's self-hosted, self-custody digital asset payments infrastructure; providing stablecoin payments rails that eliminate the complexity of developing in-house blockchain payment systems while ensuring control over data and privacy.

Our product and engineering organisation is split into small autonomous squads empowered to own their problem space. As a Senior Software Engineer in the Layer 1 Digital Asset squad, you'll design and build the core blockchain infrastructure that powers BVNK's digital asset capabilities. You'll work across services including Crypto Service, Blockchain Provider Services, Crypto Orchestration Service, and Vault Service; enabling secure address generation, deposits, withdrawals, custody, and on-chain operations across multiple blockchain networks and assets.

You'll be expected to form strong opinions and execute in a fast but sustainable way, advocating for the simplest solution that achieves the outcomes our customers are looking for.

Key Areas of Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance backend services powering blockchain integrations, digital asset custody, and on-chain transaction processing at scale.
• Build and evolve integrations with blockchain networks, crypto providers, and custody infrastructure to support multi-chain, multi-asset operations.
• Contribute to the architecture and evolution of the Layer1 platform, ensuring reliability, security, and data integrity across blockchain networks and asset types.
• Build and maintain APIs that support the full digital asset lifecycle — address generation, deposits, withdrawals, consolidation, and balance management — consumed by teams across the platform.
• Drive improvements to system observability, performance, and resilience, including monitoring, alerting, and incident response.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners including product, design, and other engineering squads to deliver high-impact features.
• Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and technical design sessions to uphold engineering standards.
• Contribute to the team's engineering culture by mentoring peers, sharing knowledge, and championing best practices.
• Participate in an out-of-hours on-call rotation.

What we need from you: 

• 5+ years experience as a backend software engineer, with deep proficiency in languages such as Java, Kotlin or similar JVM-based languages.
• Experience designing, building, and operating microservices in a distributed systems environment.
• Solid understanding of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and event-driven architectures (e.g., Kafka, SQS/SNS).
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
• Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code concepts and modern software delivery practices (CI/CD).
• Experience with observability and reliability tooling including logging, metrics, tracing, and performance optimisation.
• Comfortable working with Jira, Confluence, Git-based workflows, and collaborative engineering practices.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
•  A thoughtful, practical approach to problem-solving that considers tradeoffs and avoids over-engineering.

Nice to have:

• Experience working with blockchain technologies, cryptocurrency infrastructure, or digital asset custody systems.
• Exposure to stablecoin payments, on-chain transaction processing, or multi-chain infrastructure.
• Understanding of key management, wallet architecture, or self-custody patterns.
• Experience integrating with blockchain node providers and on-chain screening or compliance tools.
• Understanding of domain-driven design and hexagonal architecture patterns.
• Experience working in fintech, payments, or other high-availability transactional systems.
• Experience working in high-growth or fast-scaling technology environments.
• Experience contributing to engineering strategy, hiring, or organisational scaling initiatives.
