What is this role about?
As Head of AML, you will take a central role in protecting and shaping a fast-growing digital financial services business operating across multiple markets. Acting as the MLRO, you will have end-to-end responsibility for the AML, CTF, and Sanctions framework, with the mandate to set direction, challenge the status quo, and raise standards as the business scales. You will work closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to integrate effective AML controls into customer journeys, systems, and decision-making, balancing regulatory expectations with commercial realities.
This role is well-suited to an experienced MLRO or Head of AML who is ready to operate at a greater scale, with broader ownership and visibility across the organisation.
Your main responsibilities:
- Lead the AML second line of defence and act as the company’s MLRO across all markets.
- Own and evolve the AML/CTF and Sanctions framework, ensuring it fits a digital financial services environment.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate ML/TF and Sanctions risks, including ownership of the Enterprise-Wide Risk Assessment.
- Define and maintain customer risk scoring and ensure its effective use throughout the customer lifecycle.
- Ensure robust CDD, EDD, and ongoing monitoring, including transaction monitoring, sanctions screening, PEP screening, and adverse media screening.
- Lead regulatory reporting and engagement, including suspicious activity reporting and regulator interaction.
- Build and promote strong AML awareness through company-wide training and clear accountability.
What would ensure success in this role?
- Deep expertise in EU AML/CTF regulation, EBA guidelines, sanctions regimes, and FIU expectations for financial institutions.
- Proven ability to translate regulatory requirements into practical, scalable AML frameworks, controls, and governance.
- Experience in leading AML risk assessments, customer risk models, and defining risk appetite.
- Solid hands-on knowledge of CDD and EDD, including beneficial ownership, PEP handling, and remote onboarding controls.
- Experience overseeing transaction monitoring and screening systems, including scenario design, tuning, and case management.
- End-to-end ownership of STR/SAR processes.
- Previous engagement with FIU, ensuring high-quality reporting and defensible decision-making.
- Strong AML governance and assurance experience, including testing, audits, and senior management reporting.
- Relevant higher education degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in law, finance, economics, or a related field.
