What is this role about?

As a Manual Underwriter at Bondora, you will play a key role in ensuring high quality credit decisions for cases that require human judgment beyond automated decisioning. Your focus will be on reviewing manual loan applications and exceptions, verifying customer information, and assessing affordability, risk, and compliance within a regulated EU consumer credit environment.

This is a hands on role with direct impact on portfolio quality, fraud prevention, and customer outcomes. You will work closely with Credit, Customer Service, and Data teams to improve decision quality, support model development, and strengthen credit policies.

Your main responsibilities

  • Review and underwrite manual loan applications and exception cases in line with Bondora’s credit policy.
  • Verify customer identity and documentation, including KYC checks, income evidence, employment data, and supporting materials.
  • Calculate affordability metrics and debt service ratios, and assess repayment capacity, fraud risk, and identity risk for selected cases.
  • Make clear and timely approve or reject decisions and document the rationale accurately in the case management system.
  • Escalate unusual or high risk cases, such as complex income structures, suspected fraud, or regulatory concerns, to the credit management team.
  • Collaborate with data teams by labeling cases, providing feedback on model misses, and contributing to improvements in decision rules.
  • Contribute to credit policy updates, underwriting playbooks, and training materials, while helping maintain strong audit trails for internal and regulatory reviews.
  • Monitor manual review KPIs such as turnaround time, override rates, and default outcomes, and propose process improvements.
  • Define and maintain clear playbooks for customer service teams to handle manual verification related tasks.

What would ensure success in this role?

  • Strong knowledge of regulated consumer credit underwriting within the EU environment.
  • Experience assessing affordability, income stability, and credit risk in manual decision making.
  • Comfort working with Excel, custom built CRM or ERP systems, and other credit decisioning tools.
  • Ability to interpret data, identify inconsistencies, and make sound decisions based on evidence.
  • High attention to detail, sound judgment, and confidence in documenting and explaining decisions.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and contribute feedback that improves policies, processes, and models.

What can you expect at Bondora?

  • Contribute to Bondora’s ambitious goal of reaching 1BN in revenue. Your skills and efforts will directly impact our growth trajectory and shape the future of our company.
  • Our employees deserve the best. We recognize our people with a competitive salary and a generous benefits package (5 weeks of vacation, private healthcare compensation, hobby grant, mental healthcare support, share options and much more!)
