Product Designer
WHO WE ARE AT BASH
We are a team of leaders, bold thinkers and friends, and we’re on a mission to create remarkable omni-channel experiences for our customers.
We believe that by being Bold, Accountable, Simple and Human, our values will lead us forward, keeping us real, connected and directed.
By leveraging the power of technology and exceptional talent, we are building products that bring the physical and digital world together to create communities that prosper. This journey requires grit, ambition and teamwork as we transform SA retail for the better.
And we’re only just getting started. Now is the time to jump onboard.
Bash's Experience Design (XD) team is at the forefront of shaping omni-commerce experiences that reach millions of customers and empower 30,000 store employees. From online shopping and in-store tech to fintech solutions and logistics, we go beyond designing screens - we craft seamless, high-impact digital experiences that solve real-world challenges.
As a Product Designer, you'll own design execution across a product area - from interpreting briefs and UX flows through to dev-ready UI delivery. You'll work with increasing independence, balancing craft quality with pace, contributing meaningfully to Elementa-Ø (our design system), and collaborating fluidly across product, engineering, and UX. You're not just executing - you're starting to shape how work gets done.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Design execution and ownership
- Take ownership of end-to-end UI design for product features within your area - from concept through to engineering handoff.
- Translate UX briefs and research insights into high-fidelity, scalable interfaces that account for all key states, edge cases, and responsive contexts.
- Produce structured, annotated dev-ready deliverables that minimise ambiguity for engineering.
- Build and prototype interaction patterns that communicate motion, transitions, and micro-interactions.
Systems contribution
- Contribute actively to Elementa-Ø - propose new components, flag inconsistencies, and support the evolution of the system with well-considered, reusable solutions.
- Apply and extend UI kits and component libraries with strong systems thinking, ensuring your work feeds back into the design system rather than fragmenting it.
- Uphold and advocate for visual consistency and design token usage across your product area.
Craft and quality
- Maintain a high bar for visual and interaction quality - typography, layout, hierarchy, motion, and platform-native conventions across iOS, Android, and web.
- Design with accessibility at the forefront, applying WCAG principles consistently.
- Balance speed and quality, making pragmatic trade-offs with clear rationale.
- Use AI tools actively and thoughtfully to accelerate your workflow - from generating design variations and exploring layout options to speeding up documentation and asset production.
- Understand the basics of designing for AI-assisted features: setting appropriate user expectations, handling uncertainty and error states, and communicating AI-generated content clearly.
Collaboration and influence
- Work closely with UX designers, product managers, and engineers as an equal and confident contributor - not just an executor of tasks.
- Participate meaningfully in design critiques, offering and receiving feedback with clarity and maturity.
- Support junior and associate designers through informal mentorship and review.
- Communicate design decisions with confidence, connecting your choices to user needs and product goals.
Growth
- Stay current with design tools, trends, and patterns in the omni-commerce and product design space - including how AI is reshaping design practice and product capability.
- Actively develop your product instincts - understanding why features are being built, not just what they look like.
WHO YOU ARE:
This job is for you if you have:
- Have 2–5 years of professional experience in product or UI design, with a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end UI ownership and strong visual craft.
- Are highly proficient in Figma - including components, variables, auto-layout, prototyping, and design system workflows.
- Have experience contributing to or working within a design system.
- Understand responsive and adaptive design across platforms (iOS, Android, web).
- Are knowledgeable in accessibility standards and know how to apply them practically.
- Can communicate design decisions clearly and make a case for your choices.
- Work well in cross-functional teams and are comfortable navigating ambiguity with some independence.
- Have a strong eye for detail and hold yourself to a high quality bar.
Bonus:
- Experience with no-code tools (Webflow, Framer) or documentation platforms (Supernova).
- Basic understanding of front-end development principles.
- Background in e-commerce, fintech, or omni-channel products.
We encourage applications from individuals who meet most of the criteria and are passionate about learning and growing.
Bash is a fast-moving, design-led environment where your work reaches millions of customers across app, web, and in-store. If you're ready to own meaningful product problems, grow your craft, and help shape the future of omni-commerce — we'd love to hear from you.
We ask a few optional demographic questions to monitor fairness in hiring and comply with South Africa’s Employment Equity requirements.
