Overhead Line Engineer - High Voltage - Structures

Derby; London; Manchester; Warwick

Why this Role

BakerHicks is supporting the transformation of the UK’s electricity network, delivering infrastructure critical to energy security, resilience, and the transition to net zero. As investment in renewable generation and transmission reinforcement accelerates, we continue to expand our Transmission & Distribution capability.

We are seeking an OHL Design Engineer – Civil & Structural to support the design and delivery of overhead transmission line projects across the UK. This role provides an excellent opportunity for a civil or structural engineer to develop specialist expertise within a high‑demand, future‑focused engineering discipline, working on nationally significant infrastructure programmes.

You will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team and contribute across the full project lifecycle, from early concept through to detailed design. Structured training, mentoring from experienced overhead line specialists, and clear development pathways will support your continued growth at BakerHicks.

About You

You are a technically capable engineer with a strong civil or structural engineering background and a clear interest in developing a career within the energy and power sector. You bring sound engineering judgement, a delivery‑focused mindset, and the ability to work effectively across multiple projects and stakeholders in a regulated environment.

You will be degree qualified (or equivalent) in Civil or Structural Engineering and motivated to pursue professional development, including chartership.

Key Purpose

  • Support the design of new and refurbished overhead transmission lines (11kV–400kV) across the UK.
  • Apply civil and structural engineering principles to overhead line structures, foundations, loading behaviour, conductor engineering, and electrical clearances.
  • Contribute to concept, FEED, and detailed design stages, including route development, structure selection, and technical reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with UK energy network standards, regulatory requirements, and relevant engineering codes.
  • Produce and review drawings, specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality design outputs.
  • Support the development of junior engineers and contribute to the growth of the Transmission & Distribution team.
  • Play an active role in delivering infrastructure critical to the UK’s energy security and decarbonisation objectives.

Experience & Skills Required

Essential:

  • Experience in civil, structural, geotechnical, rail, utilities, or wider infrastructure engineering.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to produce and check engineering calculations.
  • Experience delivering technical documentation, drawings, and design outputs.
  • Ability to manage tasks across multiple projects while meeting programme, quality, and budget requirements.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • A structured, proactive approach to learning and technical development.
  • Interest in developing specialist skills within the overhead line and power transmission sector.

Desirables:

  • Experience using CAD platforms such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
  • Design experience relating to foundations, steel structures, or load‑bearing systems.
  • Exposure to utilities, transmission and distribution, or power‑related projects.
  • Experience working within regulated or safety‑critical engineering environments.
